Assam Floods: Death Toll Hits 98, 1.55 Lakh Affected

Assam: Assam continues to grapple with the impact of severe flooding, with more than 1.55 lakh people across 13 districts still affected by the deluge. The death toll from this year's floods has now climbed to 98 following another reported fatality in Charaideo district.

Officials said the latest death was recorded in the Mahmora revenue circle of Charaideo, adding to the growing toll caused by the floods.

The situation remained critical across 13 districts, including Sivasagar, Golaghat, Nagaon, Hojai, Sonitpur, Dhemaji, Darrang, Biswanath, Kamrup (Metropolitan), Lakhimpur, Udalguri, Jorhat and Charaideo.

According to the latest official figures, 1,55,849 people are currently affected. Golaghat has reported the highest number of affected residents at 58,750, followed by Sivasagar with 48,286 and Jorhat with 25,259. The number has declined from Thursday, when more than 1.68 lakh people across 15 districts were affected.

Relief operations are continuing in the flood-hit areas. The administration has opened 55 relief camps, where more than 10,000 displaced residents are currently taking shelter. Another 18 relief distribution centres are also providing essential assistance.

The floods have also caused significant damage to agriculture and livestock. Nearly 10,749 hectares of cropland remain submerged, while more than 47,000 animals have been affected by the disaster.

Meanwhile, the Assam government is preparing to begin a detailed assessment of the flood damage in the worst-hit districts. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced that officials will conduct a door-to-door survey from August 9 to August 30 in Jorhat, Sivasagar, Golaghat and Charaideo.

The government has said that every affected household will be covered during the assessment and that eligible families will receive relief according to government norms.

Once the initial survey is completed, the findings will be cross-checked with affected families to ensure that no genuine beneficiary is excluded. The state government expects to have a clearer estimate of the funds required for long-term rehabilitation by September 10.

Authorities plan to use the assessment to determine the financial resources needed for permanent rehabilitation and begin assistance to flood-affected families accordingly.
