Moshi Tragedy: Young Widow Dies a Month After Husband’s Death
A 23-year-old woman from Moshi-Borhadewadi, identified as Sonali Nagesh Gaikwad, reportedly died by suicide a month after her husband Nagesh was killed in the Moshi garbage depot collapse. Her maternal relatives have alleged harassment by her in-laws and raised questions about the handling of compensation following the tragedy. Police are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding her death.
Pune: A month after losing her husband in the devastating Moshi garbage depot collapse, a 23-year-old woman from Moshi-Borhadewadi has reportedly died by suicide, leaving her family and two young daughters devastated.
The deceased has been identified as Sonali Nagesh Gaikwad. The incident reportedly occurred at her residence around 5pm on Wednesday, sending shockwaves through the locality.
Sonali’s husband, Nagesh Gaikwad, was among the nine workers who died after a massive mound of waste collapsed onto an administrative building at the Moshi waste-to-energy facility on July 8. Nagesh, who was 26, was one of the workers whose bodies were recovered during the prolonged rescue operation.
The tragedy had already left the Gaikwad family struggling to cope with the sudden loss. Relatives have now alleged that Sonali was under severe emotional distress following her husband’s death. They have also raised allegations of harassment by her in-laws and claimed that she was subjected to pressure within the family after Nagesh’s death.
Her maternal relatives have sought a detailed investigation into the circumstances preceding her death. They reportedly approached the Bhosari MIDC police along with other family members and raised concerns about the treatment she allegedly received after becoming a widow.
The family has also questioned the handling of financial assistance provided following the Moshi tragedy. Relatives have alleged that ₹10 lakh was received as compensation and claimed that the amount was divided between Sonali and her in-laws. These claims have not been independently established and are expected to be examined as part of the police inquiry.
Sonali’s death has added another painful chapter to a tragedy that had already shattered several families in Pimpri-Chinchwad.The death of Sonali has left her two young daughters without both parents, barely weeks after they lost their father in the Moshi disaster.
