Pune Railway Station Set for ₹442-Crore Expansion, 6 New Platforms Planned
Pune railway station is undergoing a ₹442-crore infrastructure upgrade aimed at increasing passenger capacity and allowing more long-distance trains to operate. The project includes six new platforms, extensions to existing platforms, additional railway lines, stabling facilities and an electronic interlocking system.

Pune: Pune railway station is set for a major transformation as Central Railway undertakes a ₹442-crore yard remodelling and passenger-facility upgrade. The project is aimed at increasing the station’s capacity and preparing it to handle more trains and longer coach formations.
At present, around 150 trains originate, terminate or pass through Pune station each day. Railway officials expect the upgraded infrastructure to support around 20 additional services once the ongoing works are completed.
A key component of the project is the expansion of the station’s platforms. At present, only two platforms can accommodate full-length train rakes. Work is underway to extend other platforms so that longer trains can also be handled efficiently.
According to the sanctioned plan, ₹202.39 crore has been allocated for passenger amenities. Of this, ₹129.57 crore is earmarked for new platforms 7/8, 9/10 and 11/12, along with facilities such as foot overbridges, a skywalk, lifts and escalators.
Existing platforms 1 to 6 will also receive upgrades. Around ₹37.12 crore has been allocated for improvements including flooring, painting, toilet repairs and drainage. The project additionally includes a permanent holding area and a new parcel office.
Another ₹239.64 crore has been sanctioned under traffic facilities for yard remodelling. The work includes extending platforms 2/3, 4/5 and 6, adding two platform lines and creating new stabling lines where trains can be parked when not in operation.
The railway infrastructure will also receive a third main line linking the Ghorpadi Coach Maintenance Complex with Pune and Hadapsar. An electronic interlocking system is being introduced to improve operational safety by preventing conflicting train movements.
The expansion forms part of a broader railway development programme in Maharashtra. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw had earlier announced plans to expand Pune station from six to 12 platforms. Development work at Hadapsar and plans for a Mega Coaching Terminal at Alandi are also part of the larger capacity-enhancement strategy.
The Pune station redevelopment is expected to be completed in phases over the coming years and could significantly improve the movement of trains through the city while providing passengers with upgraded facilities.
